\u2018Who are you?\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, \u2018I\u2014I hardly know, sir, just at present\u2014at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018What do you mean by that?\u2019 said the Caterpillar sternly. \u2018Explain yourself!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018I can\u2019t explain myself, I\u2019m afraid, sir\u2019 said Alice, \u2018because I\u2019m not myself, you see.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018I don\u2019t see,\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018I\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t put it more clearly,\u2019 Alice replied very politely, \u2018for I can\u2019t understand it myself to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018It isn\u2019t,\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Well, perhaps you haven\u2019t found it so yet,\u2019 said Alice; \u2018but when you have to turn into a chrysalis\u2014you will some day, you know\u2014and then after that into a butterfly, I should think you\u2019ll feel it a little queer, won\u2019t you?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Not a bit,\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Well, perhaps your feelings may be different,\u2019 said Alice; \u2018all I know is, it would feel very queer to me.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018You!\u2019 said the Caterpillar contemptuously. \u2018Who are you?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which brought them back again to the beginning of the conversation. Alice felt a little irritated at the Caterpillar\u2019s making such very short remarks, and she drew herself up and said, very gravely, \u2018I think, you ought to tell me who you are, first.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Why?\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here was another puzzling question; and as Alice could not think of any good reason, and as the Caterpillar seemed to be in a very unpleasant state of mind, she turned away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Come back!\u2019 the Caterpillar called after her. \u2018I\u2019ve something important to say!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This sounded promising, certainly: Alice turned and came back again.
\n\u2018Keep your temper,\u2019 said the Caterpillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Is that all?\u2019 said Alice, swallowing down her anger as well as she could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
